The Breakers

The problem with words

is that they are relentless

Whether I am there

to hear them

or to write them

they are continual

They are like the breakers

crashing against the shore

altering it relentlessly

They roar

they crash

they woo us to sleep

They buffet us

with the roar

of their anger

They console us

with their susurration

they lull us

with their whispers

Unceasingly

Enrage me

soothe me

hold me

lift me

Let me stand

in the spray

Show me passion

and fire

Surround me

love me

Return to me

when I think

you have emptied yourself

Pull back

just long enough

to allow me to think

the storm has passed

Crash against me

with loud and sudden

unavoidable moments

of clarity

Build

layer upon layer

until something new exists

where nothing stood before

Come to me

words like the waves

change me ever

The blessing of words

is that they are relentless
