The Writing of a Life

Think of life as a novel

days as pages —

some crisp with beginnings

some smudged with endings

There are pages of love

pages of hurt

pages of grief

that gather themselves

into the long arc

of a single life

As we turn back through them

we see where we stood

where we wandered

where we arrived

There are pages of hope

pages of hardship

pages of faith

pages of doubt —

pages where we flourished

pages where we faded

There are pages on the mountain

filled with glory and sunlight

and pages in the valley

where the ink ran thin

There are pages we wish

had never been written

and pages we hold

like a warm stone in the hand

All of life fills these pages —

every jagged line

every quiet margin —

and somehow

they make a story

we continue to read

even as we write it
