Have you been there
broken
by some thoughtless word or deed
by the very act of living
Life breaks us at times
just by being
Life buffets us
the abrasive nature of time
tears at us
Death takes blows at us
before we fully know
what it means
Suddenly
we find ourselves
broken
We gather
as best we can
the broken pieces
the shards of self
not knowing yet
why the fragments matter
We retreat
to heal
to piece our lives back together
Even repaired
we are forever changed
We walk back into our lives gingerly
we can feel the rough edges
of our repair, the tender scars
And somewhere
in the quiet of healing
a memory returns
A voice
steady and certain
saying
“Gather the fragments
that remain”
And suddenly
the broken pieces
are not debris
they are something
worth saving
So we gather them
every shard of self
because the One
who knew our brokenness
before we did
told us
to gather the fragments
that remain
that nothing
be lost
