The room is full of us
all looking at the same loss
from separate places
Family and friends
gather to commemorate
and console our hearts
offering well-meant words
“We are thinking about you.
If there is anything we can do
just let us know”
I am trying to fall apart
and now you want a list
another task to complete.
Name the need.
Work up the nerve.
Risk being a burden.
In my grief,
you’ve given me
an assignment.
Identify a problem.
Think rationally.
Make a request.
I know it’s not meant like it sounds
I have said the same words.
You know life.
You know the needs.
Bring a casserole.
Mow the yard.
Take the trash to the curb on trash day.
Walk the dogs.
Pick up the groceries.
Lift the edge of the burden
and slip a shoulder under it.
Don't ask what I need.
Look around.
Find something heavy.
Carry it with me.
